A Series of Three Weekends: May 17 – 19… June 7 – 9… June 28 – 30

Historically, all cultures have created (and demanded) rites of passage, some form of severance in which the child bids goodbye to dependency in order to become an adult. The Call to Adventure is for men and women ready to discover their strength and gifts, and to stand up and claim them… people longing to listened to and mirrored in realistic and authentic ways… people ready to be validated in a supportive community of equals outside their family’s or culture’s view of the world. It’s for people willing to celebrate and affirm their strengths, move beyond any past stories of victimhood, and see their lives as a quest for authenticity and vision.

This series can be considered a “gateway program,” an introduction and deep exploration of the human side of the “human nature in Nature” offerings of Circles of Air and Stone. Meeting over three weekends, we’ll explore what it means to live heroically as we discover hidden ways we may still be imprisoned by mother’s – father’s — culture’s view of who we should be, and how these stories and wounds express themselves in our relationships and lives. With the help of archetypal psychology, psychodrama, fierce truth-telling, and other ritual and evocative processes, we’ll cut those cords that hold us to a child’s view of the world and break out of the superficial and soul-deadening roles our culture lays out for us.

In The Call to Adventure we engage in rituals to access the heroic and integrate what’s been lost. Exploring our gold and Shadow, facing our monsters and finding our allies, we’ll enter our personal Unknown to find our power and gifts while creating self-trust and a nurturing, healthy adulthood. Discovering and embracing a larger story and context for our lives will lead us to a bigger “dream,” one that can support and guide us through life as well as heal our relationships, families, and communities.

Directions

We will meet at Earthlands Retreat Center in Petersham, MA.

Driving:

If you are coming from Connecticut or New York, access Interstate 91, which runs north-south from Hartford and New Haven to Vermont. Take Interstate 91 to Route 2 East, in Greenfield, Massachusetts. If you are coming from Vermont, take I-91 south to Route 2 east.

Route 2 runs east-west across the whole state of Massachusetts. To get on Route 2 from Interstate 91, take Exit 27 in Greenfield, and head east, following the signs pointing to Boston. Proceed east on Route 2 about 25 miles until you come to ¬Exit 17. The signs will say “Route 32, Petersham.

Take Route 32 south for about 6 miles until coming to the center of Petersham. In the center of town you will turn left (just past the country store) on East St.

Proceed on East Street for about 2.3 miles and turn left on Glasheen Rd. (It will be the third left you come to, and there will be a sign for Earthlands). Drive up Glasheen Rd and follow the signs to “Parking.” You can drive up to the lodge, unload your gear, and then bring your car back to the parking lot.

If you are coming from Boston, take Route 2 west to exit 17, and proceed south on Route 32 as described above. Route 32 intersects Route 2 about 4 or 5 miles beyond the point in Athol where Route 2 ceases to be a divided highway.

Food and Lodging

Food:

The ingredients for the main meals will be provided, but each month, participants will bring a contribution to our meals together. This could be snacks, juice, breads, etc. We’ll let you know.

Our meal plan will be somewhat flexible to accommodate the timing of the various exercises and activities we will do on the weekends, but in general it will look something like this:

  • Friday evening – no meal, but snack food will be available.
  • Saturday morning –  Coffee/tea/light snack early.
  • Brunch will be a major meal, generally happening around 10:30 AM.
  • Dinner will be the other major meal of the day. This could happen as early as 5:00 or as late as 8:00 depending on our work together. Snacks will be available.
  • Sunday morning will be a breakfast, after which we will clean up and finish our work.
