The Medicine Wheel is an ancient teaching tool which places our human concerns within the larger framework the natural world and its creative processes. As such, it allows us to experience these core issues, not as our individual dysfunctions, but as lessons that need to be addressed on our journey to becoming co-participants within the great cycle of life.
Medicine Wheel teachings are found all across the earth. The archetypal energies represented by the directions — north, south, east, and west — are also associated with the seasons — spring, summer, fall, winter… the elements — earth, air, fire, water… our multi-dimensional nature — body, psyche, mind, spirit… and the human life cycle — childhood, adolescence, adult, and elder. The symbol of the medicine wheel is powerful, simple, and elegant. It steps outside the polarities and dualities of our rational mind to combine two fundamental and seemingly-opposite core truths. It affirms and celebrates diversity — evoked by the particular elements, seasons, or directions — while recognizing our essential unity and oneness represented by the circle.
Circles of Air and Stone is known for workshops that are intense and experiential. This is no exception. On each full day we will explore a direction, beginning with the relevant teaching. Then — through ritual and ceremony, storytelling and mirroring, tasks in nature, and evocative processes that reveal inner and outer landscapes — find that luminal space where known and unknown, heaven and earth, light and shadow touch. There, where polarities dissolve or are swept away, we’ll use this ancient system of knowledge to help face our demons and find our guides on the journey to become whole and fully human.
I came not knowing what I was seeking. I felt challenged by many of the activities, but each weekend I found something in myself I had never imagined was there. Wow, I grew! — G.W., Vermont
The South Shield: Trust and Innocence, the Lessons of Childhood
Trust and Innocence form the foundation for a passionate and engaged relationship with life. Focusing on those forces that have damaged or limited our love of the world and ourselves, we will say goodbye to what no longer or never has served us, and claim our birthright to fully express ourselves. (Monday)
West Shield: The Lessons of Adolescence — Introspection and the Separate Self
Moving beyond childhood requires creating a separate sense of self with our unique identity, values, and meaning. Too little separateness results in codependence and approval seeking; too much leads to isolation and disconnection. To be someone — ourselves — requires setting boundaries, discovering and claiming who we are and aren’t. Developing our inner landscape — with its passions, powers, gifts, and limitations is a precursor to becoming an adult. In adolescence we must learn the dangers and the delights of the passage leading to soulful and deep connections between others and ourselves. (Tuesday)
The teachings are timely, profound and grounding. This program helped me break through barriers that I did not even know existed. — TL Donnelly, Kingston, NY
North Shield: The Lessons of Adulthood — Wisdom and the Giveaway
It is the adults who keep all healthy communities together. They must possess wisdom, know their gifts and the right use of energy in order to make meaningful contributions to their people. Modern culture not only lacks meaningful rites of passage, but most people have little sense of what the defining characteristics of adulthood are. “What are your gifts? Who are your people?” We must find real answers to these questions and the tools to replace energy-wasting habits of thought and action to realize the direction and determination that can make a real difference in our communities. (Wednesday)
The East Shield: Illumination, the Sage/Elder, and the Life Beyond the Self
We need not be defined by the roles we play, attached to and limited by the forms we take on. Call it spirit, energy, light, or vibration… we are, ultimately, more verb than noun, more river than shore. Embracing and celebrating the fundamental mystery and fluidity of our nature ushers in a sense of freedom and joy. This teaching invites us to see our true face, to meet and welcome that oddly familiar stranger, the self beyond the self we think we know. (Thursday)
