Most men have
grown up without fathers, elders to initiate them
into a sacred sense of masculinity and ground them
in the spiritual and emotional life of men. Having
no positive, male models of personal power, they
react to the omnipresent feminine by pushing it
away, degrading and trying to dominate it in themselves
or women. Overly passive or aggressive, unable to
commit or leave, men are often at their core, lost.
For all our
technological and material prowess, modern men live
in the smallest psychic space of anyone in history.
Today’s man often feels alone, isolated, and
estranged from the great rhythms of nature. He sacrifices
himself and labors, often at the expense of his
health, in a meaningless pursuit of success, unable
to define the "good life” beyond the
ability to buy more stuff. Yet he knows no alternative,
and like the athlete rushing back onto the football
field, most men today are playing hurt.
Sparrow
Hart has been involved in and leading men’s
programs and groups since 1973. At present, Circles
of Air and Stone offers the following two workshops
for men:
The
Men’s Wisdom Council: June 8–13,
2008
The
Mythic Warrior: meeting one weekend a
month for 9 months, beginning October 24, 2008
These workshops
are intensive as men create a community far beyond
the limited expressions of the male role in ordinary
life. Addressed to men who wish to move beyond adolescence
and find their power through seeing our lives as
a quest for vision, they provide a safe and sacred
space where men can face their fears, unmask and
unburden themselves, discover their passions, and
heal from wounds they have carried for decades.
