So many people tell me (and I know it to be true) that they long to feel more connected — more connected to the Earth… more connected to their bodies, their friends, their heart, communities, dreams, and imaginations. To leave behind the culture of separation and disconnection we have inherited takes some work and effort… but less than you might think.
Over 30 years ago, I began a practice of beginning each morning with a prayer. Prayer is a form of speaking to — and connecting with – the forces and energies beyond our small selves or egos. And, depending on your path or upbringing, those forms and energies beyond our selves and egos could be conceived in many ways – as the Living Earth, as Nature… as God or some Higher Power… as the Great Mystery or Spirit moving through all things.
Thousands of words could be, and have been said, but ultimately there only two prayers… The first says “Please help me,” and the second, “Thank you…”
But no matter the words, articulate or simple, I have found that over 30 years, beginning my day in this way draws my awareness and attention out of my small circle and toward the mystery and miracle of life itself, requiring me to pay attention to the larger field in which my story plays out. It trains me to look for the wonder; the blessings and ways in which the great movements and energies of the universe nurture me and create the context in which my life takes place.
I invite you to join me, to watch the slide show and experience this morning/daily prayer. I hope this practice of gratitude, of connecting with the larger forces and miracle in which your life takes place might become part of your path that leads to the dream you were meant to live.

when? Who will sing
the praises of this place
if not you?
Can you make love
with limp excuses?
Just one word
in your own voice would cock the heads of robins,
but today they listen only to worms.
a thousand birds
give the world a chorus of themselves
without hesitation or regret.
All through the day
the trees and sky
speak in the hushed voices of lovers,
and in the night
the grasses sigh in the warm hands
of the evening breeze
while fireflies flash their honest love
to the distant stars passing overhead.
When you are ready,
join the conversation —
it still needs the strong and delicate
sound of your voice.
